Taxing Units are allowed to "tax" your property if it is located within their jurisdiction. They use a formula to calculate the property tax you must pay.

Tax = Tax Rate per $100 X Market Value (less any exemptions and caps)

In order to reduce your property taxes, the first place to attack is the Market Value established by the appraisal district.

Equally important is making sure ALL exemptions you are entitled to are in place before the tax roll is certified and passed to the taxing unit.

Some property has a "cap". If your property was your homestead last year, then the "taxable" value may not increase more than 10%.
